History, impact and effects of Electronic media

Media that use electronics or electromechanical audiences to access the content. may also be considered electronic media. In simple words media that uses electricity to deliver content to its audience is called electronic media. Examples are discussed below in the types of electronic media.

  • Radio,

  •  Television,

  • E-newspapers,

  • Blogs,

  • Social networking sites

  • Vlogs

internet facilitates all above-mentioned sources except radio and television social media sites.

Radio was introduced in India in 1923 by few private ventures and has been popular since then but lately, the popularity of Radio is noted to have reduced as it is mostly a one-way audio communication source and with minimum feedback scope.

Television was introduced in India in 1959 as an audiovisual electronic media its penetration is now to almost every household and it's not just a source of education, information, and entertainment it has also become a symbol of luxury.

The latest form of electronic media is e-newspapers and social networking sites all facilitated with the help of the internet, enabling user to communicate, educate, update and entertain. Internet was introduced in India in 1995 with very limited number of users however situation changed in 2016 with the advent of the Jio digital life champaign, taking the daily usage from 700mbs to 11GB and making 54.29 percent of India connect to the internet at cheap prices. The Internet has a high feedback scope and a user can rewind the video or re-read the text if wish to and at times store the content digitally, promoting paper-free society and storage vast information in a mere small chip.

Electronic media have made a special place in all of our hearts given the ease of use and quick propagation of information it has its dark sides on its user as well. watching TV or sitting in front of monitors or looking into cellphone screens for lengthy durations can cause ‘DES’ digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome this results in double vision, chronic migraines, blurred vision.

Tv addiction can lead to obesity, migraines, eye problems, and aggressive behavior especially among children, whereas radio can sometimes spread misinformation to large masses.

Social media’s ill effects are on another level irresponsible use of it can lead to

  • Cyberbullying.

  • Depression and anxiety.

  • Selfabsorption (in extreme cases narcism).

  • Loss of trust among people.

  • Aid in spreading fake and dangerous information.

  • Loss of interest in conventional sources of knowledge e.g. Books and newspapers.

  • Sleep deprivation and many more.

Electronic media is a highly useful source of information but it comes with its risks how can we avoid those risks to get maximum positive use out of it? few remedies are as follows

  • Limit when and where you use social media. Using it while traveling in public transport can be a waste of time instead try to read books while traveling every day.

  • Have DETOX period.

  • Pay attention to what you see and experience first hand and cherish it.

  • Use social networking sights mindfully always ask ‘Why?’

  • Cross-check the information before reposting or sharing it.

Just like any other tool, electronic media is a great and useful tool it is up to us Humans to use it properly and responsibly to maintain peace and good health among fellow humans.

Thank you.
