Bandi Chhor Divas 2025: A Festival of Freedom and Light

 Introduction

India is a land where every festival has a story of values, courage, and inspiration. Of all of them, Bandi Chhor Divas occupies a special place in Sikh history. In the year 2025, this sacred day will coincide on 20th October, coinciding with the festival of Diwali. Bandi Chhor Divas is not just lights and happiness—it is freedom, justice, and compassion.

The History Behind Bandi Chhor Divas

Bandi Chhor Divas is celebrated by the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru. Guru Ji had been imprisoned by the Mughal emperor Jahangir at the Gwalior Fort on political and religious charges. When the emperor offered to release him, Guru Ji imposed a condition on him—he would not depart unless the 52 Hindu kings (rajahs), who were also in prison, were set free. Jahangir accepted ,but on the stipulation that only those who could physically cling to Guru Ji could depart with him. To see all of them freed, Guru Ji instructed a cloak to be sewn with 52 tassels, one for each king to wear. Thus, he rode out of the fort, not single-handedly but accompanied by all 52 kings. This was an act of benevolence and justice and therefore, the day has been celebrated as Bandi Chhor Divas, which means the "Day of Liberation."

Freedom is not precious unless it is won by everybody.

Leadership is thinking for everyone else, not for oneself.

Compassion, justice, and harmony are the pillars of a harmonious society.

Light is not just diyas and candles but also driving away the darkness of fear, injustice, and selfishness.
