The History Behind Bandi Chhor Divas Bandi Chhor Divas is celebrated by the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru. Guru Ji had been imprisoned by the Mughal emperor Jahangir at the Gwalior Fort on political and religious charges. When the emperor offered to release him, Guru Ji imposed a condition on him—he would not depart unless the 52 Hindu kings (rajahs), who were also in prison, were set free.
