Indian Film Industry
The Indian film industry began in 1896, when the first motion pictures were screened in India. Dadasaheb Phalke is known as the father of Indian cinema. He made Raja Harishchandra in 1913, considered India's first full-length feature film. The 1930s saw the beginning of talkies, with Alam Ara (1931) becoming India's first sound film. After independence in 1947, Indian cinema grew rapidly. The 1950s and 1960s are often considered a golden era, producing influential filmmakers and actors. Hindi cinema, popularly known as Bollywood, became especially popular, while regional industries such as Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam and Marathi cinema also developed strongly. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Indian films became known for action, romance, family drama and music.
