Beyond Cricket: How India's Athletes Are Rewriting the Asian Games Story

•75 Years of the Asian Games

Seventy-five years ago, New Delhi hosted the very first Asian Games. This year's edition in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, marks that 75th anniversary, and Indian athletes are celebrating it in style.

• India Crosses the 50-Medal Mark

Around 500 Indian athletes are competing across 469 medal events in 43 sports, and India has already crossed the 50-medal mark. But the numbers hide the real stories: long waits finally coming to an end.

• Breaking Decades-Long Medal Droughts

Shooter Neeru Dhanda opened India's individual gold account in the women's trap event. Mirabai Chanu's silver in the 49kg category was India's first Asian Games weightlifting medal in over two decades, since 1998. Seema Kumari ended a 16-year medal drought for India in the women's 10,000m.

India's Sporting Strength Goes Beyond Cricket

Meanwhile, India's compound archers swept the team titles. Together, these results show that India's strength now goes well beyond one or two sports.

• When Cricket Dominates the Headlines

Yet how much of this reaches the front page? When a big cricket match ends, the result dominates headlines for days. An archery sweep or a breakthrough on the track often gets a few lines at the bottom of a sports page.

•The Media's Role in Shaping Sporting Stories

That gap is not a sporting problem. It is a media problem, and it is shaped by what editors choose to prioritise and what audiences are trained to expect.

•A Responsibility for Future Journalists

As future journalists, we have a role here. Coverage creates interest, and interest creates support—from sponsors, policymakers and young athletes who see someone like themselves on screen.

•  Beyond the Podium: Telling Every Athlete's Story

A shooter or a runner who wins for the country deserves the same storytelling effort as any cricketer.

•The Games Are Still Writing History

The Games run until October 4, so more stories are still to come. The next time an Indian athlete stands on a podium, the real question is whether we will tell the story with the same energy we give cricket.
