Madhya Pradesh Passes Uniform Civil Code Bill

Madhya Pradesh Passes Uniform Civil Code Bill: A Major Step Toward Common Civil Laws

The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly has passed the Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, marking a significant development in the state's legal and political landscape. The Bill was passed during the Monsoon Session despite strong protests from the Opposition and will come into force after receiving the Governor's assent.

The Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a common set of civil laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and live-in relationships, irrespective of religion. According to the state government, the legislation is intended to ensure equality before the law, strengthen women's rights, and simplify civil legal procedures. Scheduled Tribes have been kept outside the scope of the law in order to protect their traditional customs and practices.

Among its key provisions, the Bill prohibits polygamy, requires marriages to be compulsorily registered, mandates that divorces follow a legal judicial process, grants equal inheritance rights to men and women, and requires live-in relationships to be registered within one month. The legislation also outlaws practices such as triple talaq and nikah halala under the state's civil framework.

The Bill has sparked intense political debate. The ruling government has described it as a historic reform inspired by the constitutional vision of equal civil rights, while Opposition parties have argued that such a far-reaching law should have been referred to a select committee for wider consultation before its passage.

With the passage of the UCC Bill, Madhya Pradesh has joined the growing list of Indian states that have adopted a Uniform Civil Code. The legislation is expected to play an important role in shaping future discussions on civil law reforms, constitutional values, and governance across the country.
