Everyone Has a Camera, But Is Everyone a Journalist?

Citizen journalism stands for news or information that is witnessed by someone and produced by people in society who are not professional journalists. They usually use smartphones and social media platforms to share it.


It has become so powerful, and the reason is very obvious: everyone has a smartphone and the ability to post anything, anytime. The CJP protest is a very recent example. We have seen many influencers get famous after doing citizen journalism.

It is not important that professional reporters are present everywhere at the time of an incident. When they are not, citizen journalism can come forward and help bring information to people.

But the question arises: Is the news really authentic?

We often don't know who filmed the video or when it was recorded. We also know that AI is being used to mislead people many times.          

                                               

And that is the reason professional journalism differs from citizen journalism. The news shared by professional reporters is verified and authentic. Sometimes, journalists share the news later, but before that, many people may have already shared it through their social media handles.

But I feel being first is not that important; being right is important.
