BREAKING BARRIERS AND RECORDS
The growth of women is transforming the world of sports. The Absence of Attention
Women have been competing for years with the same drive, self-discipline, and desire to succeed. However, outside the lines, the story has frequently been different. There have been fewer headlines, less media coverage, and fewer places in the sports discourse for women's sports. As a student of journalism, I've begun to view sports not just via the scoreboard but also through the narratives that surround them. And one issue keeps coming up: Why hasn't the spotlight been given equal attention if the talent is equal?
When Talent Goes Unnoticed
The challenge for female athletes has never been solely about performance. Visibility has also been a factor. For decades, women athletes had to strive for attention while men dominated television, newspapers, and digital media. Even outstanding performances might fade fast from the news cycle.
Lack of tales was not the issue when talent was not enough. Athletes overcoming financial challenges, social expectations, injuries, and inadequate facilities to compete at the highest level were numerous.
The Game Is Evolving
Today's picture is different. Women's leagues are garnering larger viewership, broadcasters are paying more attention, and fans are increasingly interested in women's competitions.
According to UN Women, the percentage of international sports coverage that focused on women's sports rose from roughly 5% in 2019 to 16% in 2022. Approximately half of the world's population watched women's sports, according to a 2024 UN Women assessment.
Another excellent example is Indian women's cricket. When women's sport is given a significant stage, the Women's Premier League has demonstrated how rapidly an audience can increase. According to reports, there were 103 million television viewers in 2024 compared to about 50 million in 2023.
These numbers tell us something important: the audience is there.
A Look Beyond the Scoreboard
Interestingly, the complete narrative cannot be told by numbers alone.
There is a human behind every medal, century, sprint, and championship. Consider players like P. V.Sindhu, who contributed to badminton's increased prominence in Indian sports, or Hima Das, whose ascent from a small Assamese village to the international circuit became a tale that transcends athletics.
Stories of perseverance abound in women's sports. There are tales of athletes juggling training and school, traveling great distances for events, recovering from injuries, and persevering in the face of adversity.
These are not just stories about sports.
They are tales about people.
The Journey Ahead
Women's sports aren't waiting for approval to expand. Athletes are already establishing crowds, smashing records, and making their own moments.
The next task will be to ensure that their stories have the depth and consistency that they deserve. As an aspiring sports journalist, I want to learn to see beyond the scoreboard—to notice the battle before the victory, the preparation behind the achievement, and the individual behind the athlete. We see more tales, more role models, and a more comprehensive image of sport itself when women receive the coverage they deserve.
