 BRICS Summit 2026: What Did India Actually Achieve?


The BRICS Summit has ended in New Delhi. Leaders met, important issues were discussed, and the New Delhi Declaration was adopted.

But now comes the bigger question — what did India actually achieve from this summit?


• A Summit Beyond Trade


This year, BRICS discussions were not limited to trade and economics. Issues like terrorism, artificial intelligence, global conflicts, climate change, and reforms in international institutions were also discussed.

The summit came at a time when the global order is changing rapidly, making BRICS an increasingly important platform for emerging economies.


• The BRICS Currency Question


One of the biggest talking points around BRICS has been the possibility of a common BRICS currency.

But there was no launch of a common currency at this summit. Instead, countries focused on increasing trade in local currencies and improving cross-border payment systems.

So, for now, the idea of a BRICS currency remains a discussion for the future.


• India Puts Terrorism on the Table


Terrorism remained an important issue for India.

The New Delhi Declaration condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and highlighted the need for stronger international cooperation against terrorism and terrorist financing.

For India, bringing this issue to a major international platform was an important part of the summit.


• A Stronger Voice for the Global South


India also continued to push for greater representation of developing countries in global institutions.

The message was clear — countries of the Global South want a bigger role in decisions that affect the global economy, politics and international security.

For India, BRICS has become one of the platforms to push this idea.


• BRICS Is Getting Bigger — But Is It Getting Stronger?


BRICS has expanded, bringing together countries with very different political and economic interests.

That makes the group more influential, but it also makes consensus more difficult.


India and China, for example, have their own differences, while other members have different priorities as well.

So keeping the group united will be one of BRICS' biggest challenges going forward.


• What Did India Actually Gain?


India gained an important diplomatic platform to discuss issues that matter to it — from terrorism and global governance to trade and technology.

But it would be too early to call the summit a complete success simply because a declaration was adopted.


The real impact will depend on whether these commitments are actually implemented.


• The Real Test Starts Now


A summit lasts for a few days. Its impact can last for years.

The real question now is whether the decisions and commitments made in New Delhi lead to changes in trade, international cooperation, technology, and global governance.


The BRICS Summit may be over, but its real results are yet to be seen.
