World Day Against Child Labour

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 12th of June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organization, civil society as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

It is important to note that hundreds of children in India drop out of schools to help their parents to earn livelihood because of extreme poverty. Children shouldn't work in fields, but on dreams, this was the theme for world day against child labour 2019, yet today 152 million children are still in child labour. Although child labour occurs in almost every sector, seven out of every ten is agriculture.

According to a survey, India continues to host the largest number of child labourers in world today. It is believed that child labour is commonly driven by family and community poverty paired with lack of access to decent work for adults and youth, weak social protection and lack of free, quality, public education and other public services.

This year on World Day Against Child Labour Day 12th June, ILO is organising a debate on the topic "COVID-19 and Child Labour: Looking Forward in Times of Crisis". It will be available online ILO TV on YouTube. The high level debate will stress the significance of shielding children from child labour in COVID-19 reaction and recovery plans while aiming the International Year on the Elimination of Child Labour (2021) and the SDG target to end child labour entirely by 2025.
