Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan

Holi is one of the most popular festivals celebrated in India. It is known as festival of colours and love. Hindus believe that it is a time to bid farewell to winters and to enjoy spring's lush colours. It is a festival of vigour and symbol of triumph of good over evil.

On the eve of holi, Holika Dahan is celebrated by burning Holika. One of the most prominent reasons for the Holika Dahan is the killing of Holika by Lord Vishnu in order to save Prahlad. Prahlad was the son of the demon king Hiranyakashyap. The king wanted everyone to follow and worship him but his son Prahlad was devoted to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap instructed his sister, Holika to sit in the burning fire with Prahlad in lap. She was blessed with a boon, as a result of which no fire could burn her. But the good always wins over evil and here too Holika burned to death while Prahlad was saved by Lord Vishnu.
The day after Holika Dahan marks the celebration of colours. People engage in a frolic with colours where they play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and coloured water. They celebrate in groups singing and dancing, and it occurs everywhere namely streets, parks, outside temples and buildings.
Festivals marks celebrations and each celebration is a reason to celebrate life.
Live life to the fullest and never miss a chance to enjoy life.
